MY STORY

Where it all began

At the age of 15, I fell into an apprenticeship as a Hand and Machine Compositor. What’s that you might ask. Well, it’s not a role that exists these days, but back then, it was a totally male-dominated trade in the publishing industry. I was, in fact, the second female apprentice to be employed at that organisation. When the offer came, I wasn’t sure if I wanted the job. My parents insisted I take it because if I wanted to leave school, I needed a job. This was a steady, secure position, with a future, they told me. I love how parents can be so insightful. The apprenticeship comprised training in graphic design, typesetting, proofreading, and camera operation in the publishing industry.

Starting my business

My business journey began a couple of years after I finished my apprenticeship. I started out as a freelancer and soon built up a nice little business working with advertising agencies and publishing service businesses. When my first child was born, I wanted the freedom to keep doing the work I loved and be there to look after my young child. I purchased my first computer—a specialised machine that cost half the price of a house at that time—and started working from home. Working from home was a rare thing back then.

Fast forward to 2024 and I’m still in business. Mind you, I have navigated many technological transitions, a personal move interstate that also entailed moving the business, and a complete re-brand in 2018.

Upskill

In 2015, I went to Uni for the first time in my life. I studied writing and editing because I wanted to add to my skill set within the publishing industry. In 2018, I received a BA in Professional Writing and Publishing. Uni drew me in. Formal learning became a new love, and I continued to study, completing a Master of Creative Writing in 2022. I’m now undertaking a Graduate Diploma of Communication (digital marketing, visual communication, and journalism) due to complete in early 2025.

More learning

I have always had a keen interest in personal development. I am an avid reader of anything in that genre. In 2019, just because I couldn’t get enough of formal learning, I undertook a course that aligned with my interest in personal development. I became a certified Life Coach. From there, I went on to more study with another organisation and in 2022, I gained accreditation as a Life Coach, NLP Practitioner and Ericksonian Hypnotherapist.

Adala Means Business is an exciting transformation for me and the Adala brand.
